With the exception of our summer student contingents, the members of CUPE Wood Buffalo are permanent residents of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
Few of us belong to the 'commuter' component of the regional population of more than 100,000,
which includes work site camp populations.
Many of us grew up in Fort McMurray or one of the neighbouring hamlets and many of us have travelled from other parts of Canada and the world in order to build our lives and our families in the bountiful and beautiful north.
We own property, we purchase houses and we rent apartments. We pay municipal, provincial and federal taxes. Our children attend either either Public or Catholic schools and many of our children elect to attend our post secondary institution, Keyano College.
We volunteer for community events and worthy causes and we are an active part of the reason that the region is ranked as one of the most generous in Canada when it comes to contributions to non-profit sector.
We travel Highway 63 and we frequent the Fort McMurray Airport, often to travel to visit with extended family, or to shop in Edmonton or Calgary, or to seek warmth and sunshine during our long, cold winters.
Through our membership in CUPE, we can take advantage of educational opportunities, conferences and conventions so that we can increase our understanding of the tools available to enhance the working conditions and rights of Canada's working populations. And more fully appreciate the value of solidarity and the beneficial relationships we share with other workers in other regions in Canada.
We do many things together as CUPE members for the benefit of our fellow citizens and our communities and neighbours.
These are just some of them...
